Island Impulse: Our Spontaneous Maui Hotel-Hopping Adventure Awaits!

Sometimes the best adventures are the ones you never planned! Just yesterday, while huddled under blankets during a particularly dreary Vancouver rain shower, Ange looked at me with that familiar glint in his eye.

“What if we were watching this rain from a resort balcony in Hawaii instead?”

Twenty minutes and one incredible flight deal later, we had booked a 4-night spontaneous escape to Maui! But in true Our Travel Journey fashion, we couldn’t settle for just one hotel experience. Why stay in one place when you could sample three of the island’s most distinctive properties? Our whirlwind hotel-hopping adventure across Maui’s stunning western and southern shores begins next week, and we can hardly contain our excitement!

The Spontaneous Booking: From Rainy Vancouver to Paradise

There’s something exhilarating about making a major decision in minutes. No overthinking, no spreadsheets comparing options (a rarity for Zee!), just pure travel impulse. When we found round-trip flights from Vancouver to Maui for nearly half the normal price, we jumped on them immediately.

The next challenge: where to stay? Rather than agonizing over which resort would be “perfect,” we’re embracing the opportunity to sample different experiences. We’ll be splitting our five nights between three distinctive properties: Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa in Ka’anapali, the luxurious Grand Wailea (A Waldorf Astoria Resort), and the more residential-style Residence Inn Maui Wailea.

As we frantically pack summer clothes that have been hibernating in storage, the reality is sinking in—in just a few days, we’ll be trading rain boots for flip-flops and parkas for swimsuits. It’s exactly the mid-spring reset we need!

Hyatt Regency Maui

Our first destination will be the Hyatt Regency in Ka’anapali, about an hour’s drive from Kahului Airport along the stunning western coastline. We’ve booked a partial ocean-view room that promises to be the perfect vantage point for our first Maui sunset. With plenty of Hyatt points to burn, it was a no brainer for us to use 25,000 Hyatt points for a night at the resort.

What We're Looking Forward To Here

From our research, the Hyatt Regency makes quite an entrance! The open-air lobby with its chattering parrots, koi ponds, and towering palms sounds like the perfect welcome to paradise. We’re particularly excited about the resort’s integration of wildlife throughout the property—flamingos, black swans, African cranes, and even penguins! Yes, actual penguins in Hawaii! The daily wildlife tour is already marked as a must-do in our itinerary.

Our arrival coincides with the resort’s Drums of the Pacific Luau, which we’ve already booked. While we initially debated whether a luau would be too “touristy,” the reviews of this oceanfront cultural experience were too compelling to pass up. Fire knife dancers, traditional storytelling through dance, and authentic Hawaiian cuisine—we’re ready to immerse ourselves in Polynesian culture on our very first night.

The Hyatt’s pool complex also looks incredible. With its winding lazy river, rope bridge, hidden grottos, and waterslide, it promises plenty of opportunities for both relaxation and play. Zee has already declared his intention to ride the waterslide at least five times—a goal I fully support as long as there’s a comfortable lounger and a tropical drink waiting for me afterward!

We’re also planning to rent snorkel gear directly from the resort to explore the famous Black Rock area at the north end of Ka’anapali Beach. The prospect of swimming alongside giant sea turtles just minutes from our hotel room feels like a dream about to come true.

Waldorf Astoria Maui

For our second night, we’ll be heading to Wailea on Maui’s southern shore. The 45-minute drive from Ka’anapali to Wailea will give us a chance to see more of the island’s diverse landscapes—from the lush, green west side to the sunnier, more arid south. This was the centerpiece of our trip, we had an expiring Free Night Award with Hilton and this was the perfect time and place to use it. We were even able to call to have the expiring certificate extended by 2 weeks to make the booking possible. Kudos to Hilton for their flexibility and understanding of our situation!

Pure Luxury Awaits

Everything we’ve read about the Grand Wailea suggests we’re in for a treat. From the lei greeting at arrival to the expansive grounds dotted with tropical gardens and art installations, this Waldorf Astoria property promises pure luxury. We’ve booked a mountain-view room, though Zee is secretly hoping for an upgrade (he’s already practicing his most charming smile for the check-in staff).

The property’s legendary pool complex is at the top of our must-experience list. Nine individual pools connected by a lazy river, white water rapids, waterslides, swim-up bar, and the world’s first water elevator? It sounds like an aquatic playground designed for adults as much as children, and we plan to take full advantage.

I’ve already booked a treatment at the renowned Spa Grande—their signature Pala’au Journey. The pre-treatment ritual alone, with specialty baths, waterfall massage, and aromatic pools, sounds like the height of relaxation. Meanwhile, Zee is researching sunset sailing excursions that depart directly from Wailea Beach. The idea of watching the sun sink below the horizon from different vantage points (me from the spa’s relaxation deck, him from the Pacific Ocean), then reuniting for dinner at the fantastically named Humuhumunukunukuapua’a restaurant (yes, we’re practicing pronouncing it) feels like the perfect balance of independence and togetherness.

We’re also intrigued by the cultural programming available at the Grand Wailea. Lei making, ukulele lessons, and early morning outrigger canoe experiences all provide opportunities to connect with Hawaiian traditions in meaningful ways. The resort’s extensive Hawaiian art collection is something I’m particularly looking forward to exploring.

Residence Inn Maui Wailea

For our final 2 nights, we’ll be shifting gears completely, checking into the Residence Inn just up the hill from the Grand Wailea. After the grandeur of our previous accommodations, we’re curious to experience this property, which promises a different kind of Maui stay. This worked out well as we also have 2 35,000 certificate that we just needed to add around 10k each to make the 2 night booking.

Space to Breathe

The one-bedroom suite we’ve booked features a full kitchen, separate living area, and in-room laundry—amenities that will be welcome after several days of resort life. We’re already planning to visit a local market and prepare a simple dinner of fresh Hawaiian ingredients to enjoy on our private lanai, a little taste of what living on the island might be like.

The Residence Inn’s location, set slightly back from the shoreline in a more residential area, will offer a different perspective on Maui. We’re planning a morning jog through the nearby neighborhoods and local parks, hoping to glimpse everyday island life beyond the tourist centers.

While it’s less expensive than our previous lodgings, the Residence Inn has excellent reviews that suggest it won’t feel like a compromise. The pool area looks beautifully maintained with plenty of comfortable seating, the breakfast buffet offers quality local options, and the sunset views from the property’s elevated position promise to be spectacular. Sometimes luxury is having room to spread out and the freedom to set your own schedule—an ethos we fully embrace!

Why We're Excited About Hotel-Hopping

As we finish our frantic packing (and online shopping for last-minute beach essentials), we’re reflecting on why this spontaneous, hotel-hopping approach feels so right for us:

Different Properties Will Reveal Different Sides of the Island

Each hotel will showcase a distinct aspect of Maui. The Hyatt will connect us with the lively, activity-rich atmosphere of Ka’anapali, where restaurants, shopping, and entertainment are just steps away. The Grand Wailea embodies the exclusive, luxury experience that South Maui is known for, with impeccable service and amenities. The Residence Inn will offer a glimpse into a more residential, less touristy island experience.

Hotel-Hopping Maximizes Experiences

Though packing and moving every couple of days will require extra effort, the variety of experiences makes it worthwhile. We’ll access different beaches, pools, and dining options, preventing the “resort fatigue” that sometimes sets in during longer stays at a single property.

Spontaneous Trips Create Special Memories

There’s something magical about deciding on Wednesday to be in Hawaii by the following week. The lack of extensive planning means we’ll approach each experience with openness and adaptability. Rather than following a rigid itinerary, we’ll discover each day organically, likely based on recommendations from staff or fellow travelers we meet poolside.

Luxury Comes in Different Forms

While the Grand Wailea offers traditional luxury with its attentive service and lavish amenities, we expect to find different kinds of luxury at each property: the Hyatt’s tropical immersion and wildlife interactions, and the Residence Inn’s spaciousness and self-sufficiency. This variety reminds us that the best travel experiences often come from contrast rather than seeking a single “perfect” accommodation.

Our Hotel-Hopping Strategy

For anyone considering a similar adventure, here’s our game plan:

  1. Allow buffer time between hotels – We’ve scheduled check-outs for late morning and check-ins for late afternoon, giving us time to enjoy amenities at both properties on transition days.
  2. Pack strategically – We’re preparing designated “active day” bags versus “pool day” bags to make it easier to access what we need without unpacking completely at each stop.
  3. Keep transportation simple – We’ve reserved our rental car for the entire trip for flexibility and storage during transition periods.
  4. Embrace the contrasts – Rather than comparing properties against each other, we’re ready to appreciate what makes each unique.
  5. Maintain some routines – Morning coffee on the lanai will be our constant across all three hotels, creating a sense of continuity amid the changes.

As the rain continues to fall in Vancouver, our spontaneous Hawaiian sojourn is the bright spot on our horizon. There’s something incredibly freeing about saying “yes” to an unexpected opportunity and figuring out the details as you go—a travel philosophy we’ve always embraced.
