Vietnam was our favourite country of a 100-day Asia trip spanning eight countries — and one of the most common questions we get from people planning their own trip is: when should I go?
It is a genuinely complicated question because Vietnam is a long, narrow country stretching 1,650 kilometres from the Chinese border to the Mekong Delta, and the climate varies dramatically across that distance. When it is dry and perfect in Hanoi, it can be wet and grey in Da Nang. When Ho Chi Minh City is in peak season, Sapa might be cold and foggy. The “best time to visit Vietnam” answer depends entirely on which Vietnam you are visiting.
This guide breaks it down honestly — by region, by month, and by what kind of trip you are planning.
The Key Thing to Understand: Vietnam Has Three Climate Zones
Vietnam’s length means weather patterns differ significantly across three distinct regions:
The North (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long Bay, Cat Ba Island) — four distinct seasons with a cool, occasionally cold winter from November to March and a hot, humid summer with heavy rain from May to September. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots.
Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue) — a narrower country with weather that works on a different schedule from the north and south. The best months are February to August — dry, warm, and ideal for beaches. Autumn and early winter bring the region’s rainy season.
The South (Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, Mekong Delta) — tropical climate with just two seasons: dry (November to April) and wet (May to October). Hot year-round, with the dry season being the clear preference for most visitors.
The practical implication: a north-to-south trip timed for the north’s best months doesn’t always align with the south’s ideal season. The good news is that Vietnam is large enough that some part of it is always in excellent condition — the key is matching your itinerary to the season.
The Best Overall Time to Visit Vietnam: November to April
If you are visiting Vietnam for the first time and want the most reliable weather across all three regions simultaneously, November to April is the safest window. The south is in its dry season throughout this period, central Vietnam is dry from February onwards, and the north is cool and clear from November to March before warming pleasantly in April.
The peak season sweet spot: January to March — dry conditions across most of the country, comfortable temperatures everywhere, and the specific magic of Vietnamese Tết (Lunar New Year, usually late January or early February) for those who want to experience the country’s most significant cultural celebration.
The trade-off: November to April is peak tourist season. Prices for flights and accommodation are higher, popular sites are busier, and booking in advance is essential for Hoi An, Ha Long Bay cruises, and Sapa trekking operators.
Month-by-Month Guide
January ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
North: Cool and dry. Hanoi at its most comfortable — clear skies, temperatures around 15–20°C, excellent visibility at Ha Long Bay. Central: Dry and pleasant. Hoi An and Da Nang in good condition. Beach weather beginning. South: Peak dry season. Ho Chi Minh City sunny, 28–32°C, perfect conditions. Verdict: One of the best months across the entire country. Peak season pricing applies — book early.
February ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
North: Cool and dry. Tết celebrations (usually late January or early February) transform Hanoi with decorations, flower markets, and family gatherings. Note that many restaurants and shops close for the holiday week. Central: Dry and increasingly warm. Da Nang beach season begins in earnest. South: Excellent dry season conditions continuing. Verdict: Exceptional month — particularly for experiencing Tết. Book well in advance as domestic travel peaks around the holiday.
March ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
North: Warming up, still largely dry, minimal crowds post-Tết. Sapa rice terraces beginning their growing season green. Central: Perfect beach weather. Da Nang and Hoi An at their best — dry, 26–30°C, clear water. South: Final month of peak dry season. Excellent conditions before heat intensifies. Verdict: One of the best months to visit Vietnam overall — good conditions everywhere without peak season crowds. Our personal recommendation for first-time visitors.
April ⭐⭐⭐⭐
North: Warm and mostly dry. Hanoi pleasant. Ha Long Bay excellent. Central: Still dry but temperatures rising toward 32–35°C in Da Nang. South: Heat intensifying but still largely dry. Best to finish southern itinerary by mid-April. Verdict: Strong month, particularly for the north and central regions. Good shoulder season pricing emerging.
May ⭐⭐⭐
North: Rainy season beginning. Occasional afternoon downpours in Hanoi. Ha Long Bay still manageable. Central: Getting hot and increasingly humid. Shoulder season pricing. South: Rainy season starting — afternoon showers but mornings often clear. Verdict: Transitional month. Manageable but not ideal. Good pricing available.
June ⭐⭐⭐
North: Rainy season in full effect. Hot and humid in Hanoi. Not the most comfortable month. Central: Hot dry season — Da Nang beach weather at peak heat (34–37°C). Good for beach holidays if heat is tolerable. South: Rainy season — daily afternoon showers, still warm and functional for most activities. Verdict: Works if you are specifically after Da Nang beaches and can handle heat. Otherwise wait.
July ⭐⭐⭐
North: Rainy season continues. Sapa treks possible but muddy conditions likely. Central: Peak heat for Da Nang beaches. Busy domestic Vietnamese tourist season. South: Regular rainy season rains. Mornings generally still sunny for exploring. Verdict: Good for beach-focused central Vietnam trips. Otherwise shoulder season.
August ⭐⭐
North: Wettest month in north Vietnam. Ha Long Bay cruises still operate but seas can be choppy. Central: Still hot, beginning of central Vietnam’s rainy season arriving later in the month. South: Peak rainy season. Regular heavy afternoon rains. Verdict: Not recommended as primary travel month. Budget travel savings available.
September ⭐⭐
North: Rainy season winding down. Sapa rice terraces at their most spectacular — golden harvest season begins in late September. Central: Rainy season — Da Nang and Hoi An experience their wettest months October through November. South: Rainy season continuing but manageable. Verdict: The Sapa harvest is genuinely extraordinary in late September but central Vietnam is best avoided.
October ⭐⭐⭐
North: Excellent autumn conditions returning. Sapa harvest in full golden spectacle. Hanoi cool and pleasant. Central: Rainy season peak for Da Nang and Hoi An — the region experiences significant flooding in some years. Check conditions carefully before booking. South: Rainy season finishing — conditions improving significantly through the month. Verdict: Outstanding for north Vietnam (Sapa harvest is worth planning a trip around). Avoid central Vietnam specifically.
November ⭐⭐⭐⭐
North: Beautiful cool autumn conditions. Excellent for Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa. Central: Rainy season — Da Nang and Hoi An can experience flooding in early November. Conditions improve toward month end. South: Dry season beginning. Ho Chi Minh City conditions improving rapidly. Verdict: Good for north and south, risky for central. If combining north and south without central, November is excellent.
December ⭐⭐⭐⭐
North: Cool and dry. Christmas in Hanoi is atmospheric — decorations, festive energy, comfortable temperatures. Central: Dry season returning by late December. Hoi An’s lantern-lit streets at Christmas are genuinely magical. South: Peak dry season in full effect. Ho Chi Minh City buzzing with year-end energy. Verdict: Strong month across all regions by late December. Christmas in Vietnam is an underrated experience — read our Christmas in Southeast Asia guide for the full story.
Best Time to Visit Each Region Specifically
Best Time to Visit Hanoi
October to April — cool and dry, clear skies, comfortable for walking the Old Quarter and day tripping to Ha Long Bay. February’s Tết celebrations are spectacular if you plan around the holiday closures.
Best Time to Visit Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay
October to April — calm seas, clear visibility, best conditions for overnight cruises. Summer months bring choppy water and reduced visibility. Read our Lan Ha Bay guide for why we recommend Lan Ha Bay over Ha Long Bay regardless of season.
Best Time to Visit Sapa
September to November for the harvest — the golden rice terraces of the Muong Hoa Valley at this time of year are among the most beautiful landscapes in Southeast Asia. March to May for spring green terraces. Avoid July and August when trekking trails are muddy and visibility is poor.
Best Time to Visit Da Nang
February to August — dry season with excellent beach weather. March to May is the sweet spot before peak heat arrives. Da Nang is Vietnam’s most searched destination internationally in 2025 — read our Da Nang travel guide and InterContinental Da Nang review for the complete picture.
Best Time to Visit Hoi An
February to August — dry conditions for the Ancient Town. The lantern-lit streets and yellow walls are most atmospheric without rain. Late October and November are the highest-risk months for flooding.
Best Time to Visit Ho Chi Minh City
November to April — the dry season delivers the most comfortable conditions in a city that is hot year-round. The wet season doesn’t make Saigon unvisitable but afternoon downpours and humidity are a daily reality from May to October.
Vietnam Crowds and Pricing by Season
Peak season (December to March): Highest prices for flights and accommodation. Most popular sites busier. Hoi An Ancient Town in particular sees significant crowds in December through February. Book everything — Ha Long Bay cruises, Sapa homestays, Hoi An accommodation — well in advance.
Shoulder season (April to May and October to November): Good pricing, manageable crowds, weather acceptable in most regions. The best value window for first-time visitors who want reasonable conditions without peak season costs.
Low season (June to September): Lowest prices — flights and accommodation significantly cheaper. Hot, humid, and rainy across much of the country. Experienced travellers and budget travellers who can work around afternoon rains will find excellent value. Central Vietnam beaches (Da Nang, Hoi An) are the exception — their dry season aligns with the national low season.
Practical Considerations for Canadian Travellers
Flights from Canada: Vancouver and Toronto to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi involve connections through Asian hubs — Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, or Taipei typically. Flight prices are significantly lower in the shoulder and low seasons. Book 3–4 months in advance for peak season departures.
Points redemptions: Read our how we saved $20,000 guide for how we funded our Vietnam hotels entirely on Marriott Bonvoy and IHG points. Hotel prices in Vietnam are low enough that points deliver good but not spectacular value at mid-range properties — reserve your best redemptions for the luxury resorts like the InterContinental Da Nang where cash rates are genuinely high.
Visa: Canadian passport holders require a Vietnam e-Visa — 90 days, straightforward online application. Read our Vietnam visa guide for the complete process.
Connectivity: Set up a Vietnam e-SIM through Airalo before departure — 10% off with our link. Coverage is excellent throughout the country.
Our Recommendation for First-Time Visitors
Go in March. Here is why:
March delivers dry season conditions across all three regions simultaneously — the rarest alignment on Vietnam’s climate calendar. Hanoi is warm and clear. Da Nang’s beaches are perfect. Hoi An is dry and atmospheric. Ho Chi Minh City is in excellent shape before the heat peaks. Sapa’s terraces are a vivid spring green. Crowds are post-Tết manageable and pricing is in the shoulder zone between peak January–February and the busy Easter period.
If March doesn’t fit your schedule, November to January is your next best window — accepting that central Vietnam in November carries some rain risk and that January brings peak pricing and advance booking requirements.
Whatever month you go — go. Vietnam is extraordinary in any season and the country’s warmth, food, and beauty are present year-round regardless of whether there is rain in the afternoon.
