Chiang Mai: A City of 300 Temples and Infinite Experiences
Chiang Mai isn’t just another temple town. It’s a spiritual experience wrapped in culture, affordability, and some of the most welcoming locals we’ve encountered anywhere in Southeast Asia.
Beyond the Temples
Chiang Mai is also known for its design scene, night bazaars, and incredibly cheap eats. We’re taking a bike tour through the old city’s backstreets, visiting the City Navel (the cosmological heart of Chiang Mai), and discovering cafés and galleries that don’t appear on Google Maps.
We’re doing a Thai cooking class (they’re everywhere, all cheap, all good), trying our hand at making pad Thai and green curry, then eating our creations for lunch.
And yes, we’re visiting at least one night market. Sunday Walking Street is a favorite, transforming the old city into a massive open-air market every weekend.
Something Special:
We’re strategically positioning ourselves for Chiang Mai’s iconic Lantern Festival by booking 2 nights at Lanna Inthan Boutique Hotel, right in Doi Saket where the festivities will unfold. Moreover, we will stay a further 3 nights at the Nine-Kai-Mon hotel in the old city afterwards. This perfect location puts us steps from Tha Phae Gate and the Night Bazaar, prime viewing spots for the festivities that continues. Even better, we covered the entire stay using CIBC points, making this high-demand festival timing completely free—a smart redemption that aligns location, timing, and value perfectly.
Chiang Mai Tips:
- Visit temples early (6-8 AM) to beat crowds and catch magical morning light at Doi Suthep and Wat Chedi Luang.
Stay in the Old City for walkable access to 300+ temples, night markets, and authentic Lanna culture.
Book sleeper train seats 30-60 days ahead—Bangkok-Chiang Mai route sells out fast.
Try Khao Soi everywhere but prioritize local spots over tourist traps for Chiang Mai’s signature curry noodle dish.
Rent a scooter ($5/day) for flexible exploration of nearby Doi Suthep trails and hidden waterfalls.
