KYOTO NIGHT #1 BUDGET HOTEL
After a long journey from KIX, arriving in Kyoto late at night, we were beyond relieved to find the JR West Group Via Inn Prime Kyoto Station Hachijoguchi just a stone’s throw away from the station’s Hachijo Exit. The hotel’s proximity to Kyoto Station was a godsend, especially considering our late arrival and travel fatigue. A mere 3-minute walk, and we were at the hotel’s doorstep – no complicated directions or costly taxi rides necessary.
The check-in process was a breeze, which we appreciated greatly given our exhaustion. The staff at the front desk greeted us with warm smiles despite the late hour, their English proficiency making communication effortless. They efficiently processed our reservation, explained the hotel’s amenities, and even offered some quick tips about nearby convenience stores for any late-night needs we might have. Their friendliness and efficiency set a positive tone for our stay right from the start.
Our room, while compact (as is typical in Japanese hotels), was a masterclass in smart design. Every inch of space was utilized effectively, providing us with all the essentials without feeling cramped. The bed was surprisingly spacious and incredibly comfortable – a detail we didn’t fully appreciate until we woke up refreshed the next morning. The room’s cleanliness was impeccable, with everything from the sheets to the bathroom gleaming.
Speaking of the bathroom, it was equipped with a high-tech Japanese toilet and a powerful shower with great water pressure – a small luxury that made a big difference after a long day of travel. The complimentary toiletries were of good quality, and the hairdryer was actually powerful enough to be effective, a rare find in many hotels.
One of the standout features was the room’s soundproofing. Despite being so close to the station, we weren’t disturbed by any noise from trains or street traffic. This tranquility was crucial in helping us overcome our jet lag and adjust to the new time zone.
The hotel’s amenities, while not luxurious, were thoughtfully curated for travelers’ needs. The free Wi-Fi was fast and reliable, allowing us to update our families about our safe arrival and do some quick research for the next day’s itinerary.
The hotel’s location proved to be a major advantage beyond just the easy arrival. Being right next to Kyoto Station meant we had access to numerous bus lines, the subway, and JR lines, making it incredibly convenient to explore Kyoto and even plan day trips to nearby cities. The icing on the cake was the 7/11 directly connected to our hotel entrance. Due to jetlag, we were up at 3:00AM and with no restaurants open at the time, the ramen and udon from 7/11 definitely hit the spot and a great start to our trip!
Overall, the JR West Group Via Inn Prime Kyoto Station Hachijoguchi proved to be an excellent choice for our stay. Its unbeatable location, efficient service, comfortable rooms, and thoughtful amenities made it a perfect base for our Kyoto adventures. While it may not offer the traditional ryokan experience some might seek in Kyoto, for travelers wanting modern comforts, convenience, and great value, this hotel ticks all the boxes. It allowed us to maximize our time exploring the city, rather than worrying about complicated commutes or uncomfortable accommodations. For couples seeking a hassle-free, comfortable stay in a prime location, we wholeheartedly recommend this gem near Kyoto Station.
KYOTO NIGHT #2: LUXURY STAY
Our journey through Kyoto took a more luxurious turn when Ange and I decided to treat ourselves to a night at The Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Spa. After we checked out of JR West Group, we took the taxi over as we had a few baggage with us. As we approached the property, nestled in the heart of Kyoto’s historic district, we were immediately struck by its seamless blend of traditional Japanese architecture and modern elegance. The exterior, with its zen garden and subtle lighting, hinted at the tranquil experience that awaited us within.
The check-in process was nothing short of extraordinary, setting the tone for our entire stay. As we entered the lobby, we were greeted by name (how on earth did she know?!!?) and ushered to comfortable seats where we were offered warm oshibori (hand towels) and fragrant green tea. The staff, impeccably dressed and unfailingly polite, handled all the formalities with graceful efficiency. Our Platinum status with Marriott was acknowledged immediately, and we were informed of our complimentary upgrade to a room with a stunning view of the garden. The personal touch continued as we were given a brief history of the property, which stands on the site of the former residence of the Mitsui family, one of Japan’s most powerful merchant houses during the Edo period.
Our room was a harmonious fusion of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern luxury. Sliding shoji screens, tatami mat areas, and minimalist furniture created a sense of space and serenity, while state-of-the-art technology ensured every comfort was at our fingertips. The bathroom, a marvel in itself, featured a deep soaking tub and a rain shower that seemed to wash away not just the day’s fatigue but the stress of our entire journey.
However, the true highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the onsite public onsen. We opted for the public one as it was free and actually empty the two times that we used it. The hotel also has a change of clothes for guests if we did not bring our bathing suits. We thought that was a very thoughtful gesture on the hotel’s part. As we descended into the spa area, the hushed atmosphere and aromatic scents transported us to a world of relaxation. We followed the traditional bathing ritual, thoroughly washing before immersing ourselves in the mineral-rich waters. As we soaked, watching steam rise into the cool air, we felt our muscles unwind and our minds clear. It was a profoundly Japanese experience, one that connected us to centuries of tradition and natural healing.
Thanks to our Platinum status, we were treated to a complimentary breakfast buffet the following morning at the hotel’s main restaurant. The spread was a culinary journey through both Japanese and Western cuisines. From perfectly grilled fish and delicate tofu dishes to freshly baked pastries and made-to-order eggs, every item was prepared with meticulous care. The standout was the hotel’s signature dish – a modern take on traditional Kyoto-style vegetables, bursting with flavors that reflected the seasons. As we savored our meal, looking out over the beautiful garden, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for this unexpected luxury in our travels.
Our overall experience at The Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto was nothing short of exceptional. Every interaction with the staff was marked by genuine warmth and attention to detail. From the concierge who helped us plan our day trips with insider tips, to the bartender who crafted bespoke cocktails inspired by Kyoto’s history, everyone seemed dedicated to making our stay memorable.
As Ange and I reluctantly checked out, we agreed that our night at The Mitsui had been more than just a hotel stay – it was a journey into the heart of Japanese hospitality. While our budget couldn’t accommodate such luxury for our entire trip, this one-night splurge had rejuvenated us both physically and mentally. It provided a perfect balance to our more modest accommodations and gave us a taste of Kyoto’s refined elegance. As we stepped back into the bustling streets, ready to continue our adventures, we carried with us the serene energy of The Mitsui, a memory we’ll cherish long after our return home.
