Part 5 Hong Kong

From Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong: A Foodie Couple’s Journey Continues

After savoring the vibrant flavors and bustling energy of Kuala Lumpur, our culinary adventure takes us to the captivating city of Hong Kong. As a couple always on the hunt for the next delectable dish, we’re thrilled to explore this gastronomic paradise, with our home base in the charming ShaTin area.

Neighbourhood

Sha Tin, located in the New Territories, offers a perfect mix of urban convenience and suburban tranquility. It’s an ideal spot for couples looking to experience authentic local life away from the tourist-heavy areas of Hong Kong Island and Tsim Sha Tsui. Our accommodation here provides easy access to both nearby attractions and efficient transport links to the rest of Hong Kong, setting the stage for our food-focused exploration.

Sha Tin offers a blend of modern urban living with touches of traditional culture. The riverside promenade is a focal point for community life, while the numerous shopping centers provide entertainment and dining options. The area is known for its relatively spacious layout compared to older parts of Hong Kong, offering a more relaxed lifestyle.

Hotel – Courtyard Sha Tin

We will be staying at the Courtyard Sha Tin for 5 nights and we booked it with 83,000 Marriott points. Hong Kong is well known for how expensive the city is so we were very happy to use some Marriott points to offset some of the spending for this trip. We were able to book the King Bed City view room and are more than satisfied. We will probably be exploring the city most of the time and won’t be in the hotel for much so anything with a comfy bed would do for us.

Things To Do

One of our first stops will undoubtedly be the Sha Tin Public Market. This bustling locale is where locals shop for fresh produce, meats, and seafood. We plan to immerse ourselves in the lively atmosphere, observing the daily rituals of Hong Kong life but unfortunately wouldn’t be able to pick up any local ingredients to try our hand at cooking since we do not have a kitchenette at our hotel. The market also houses several cooked food stalls, where we can sample authentic Cantonese dishes at wallet-friendly prices.

For a taste of Hong Kong’s famous dim sum, we’re eager to visit Sha Tin 18, a Michelin-recommended restaurant known for its handmade dim sum and Peking duck. The restaurant’s open kitchens will allow us to watch the chefs skillfully prepare our meals, adding an extra layer of excitement to our dining experience. We’ve heard that their egg custard buns are particularly noteworthy, and we can’t wait to try them.

Of course, no visit to Hong Kong would be complete without venturing into the heart of the city. We plan to take the MTR to Central, where we’ll explore the narrow streets of SoHo and NoHo. These areas are home to an eclectic mix of international cuisines and trendy bars. We’re particularly excited about trying out Little Bao, a modern fusion restaurant that reimagines traditional Asian flavors in creative ways.

For a romantic evening with a view, we’ve set our sights on Ozone, the world’s highest bar located on the 118th floor of the Ritz-Carlton. Sipping cocktails while overlooking the glittering Hong Kong skyline seems like the perfect way to celebrate our journey from Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong.

Back in Sha Tin, we’re looking forward to exploring Shalun Street, known for its traditional dessert shops. After our adventures in the city center, it’ll be lovely to stroll hand in hand down this quiet street, indulging in sweet treats like tofu pudding and red bean soup.

As food lovers, we’re also intrigued by the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, not just for its cultural significance, but for the vegetarian restaurant located within its grounds. The opportunity to enjoy meat-free Chinese cuisine in such a unique setting is too good to pass up.

From street food to fine dining, from local markets to high-end restaurants, our upcoming trip to Hong Kong promises to be a feast for all senses. While we loved the flavors of Kuala Lumpur, we’re excited to discover how Hong Kong’s cuisine, with its Cantonese roots and international influences, will compare. Our base in Sha Tin will allow us to experience both local life and the excitement of central Hong Kong, creating a well-rounded and delicious adventure for us as a couple. We can’t wait to share our gastronomic discoveries and romantic moments in this fascinating city!
